He felt a little pain
He felt a little pain today
And a lump.
And as is the way with middle aged men
He imagined it to be death.
Not a fanciful death.
It was a lump
So he imagined it to be a cancerous growth.
Then he set to dreaming of Death.
He thought how Death is sometimes portrayed
As the last lover
Someone terrible, yet welcomed, and welcoming,
With an embrace.
But he knew that Death is too busy to embrace.
Death is like a King with oh so many subjects.
No doubt he is dutiful and cares for them all
But He has so little time.
So busy. So busy.
And he felt that to wish to embrace Death
Was disrespectful.
Still, he welcomed Death.
Which is not always the way with middle aged men.
But some of us...
